A server that sits between a client application, such as a Web browser, and a real server. It intercepts all requests to the real server to see if it can fulfill the requests itself. If not, it forwards the request to the real server.http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/p/proxy_server.html

a proxy is just what it name implies, it acts for another. So a proxy server is a system which acts for one or more groups of computer system. It's most common usage is to act as a gateway to fetch websites for computers that are connected to it, but it can do a lot more depending on what services you want to proxy.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server

In an enterprise that uses the Internet, a proxy server is a server that acts as an intermediary between a workstation user and the Internet so that the enterprise can ensure security, administrative control, and caching service. A proxy server is associated with or part of a gateway server that separates the enterprise network from the outside network and a firewall server that protects the enterprise network from outside intrusion. The functions of proxy, firewall, and caching can be in separate server programs or combined in a single package. Different server programs can be in different computers. For example, a proxy server may in the same machine with a firewall server or it may be on a separate server and forward requests through the firewall.

A proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. A client connects to the proxy server, and then requests a connection, file, or other resource available on a different server. The proxy provides the resource either by connecting to the specified server or by serving it from a cache. In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes. A proxy server can also serve as a firewall. A proxy server makes a connection to the Internet on behalf of a client.

The definiton has changed somewhat as the product developed. It used to be a piece of a network that sat seperately outside of a network so that people could access it without entering your network.Say if you were hp and you wanted an area where people could download drivers and not enter your network it could sit outside or your network and allow access for the downloads without letting users in ( for safety and privacy of your network)Now a proxy server has another purpose. It serves as a cache fro broadband cable internet isps to store internet data of the common downloads ( say a microsooft service pack)/The isp users can download from a stored cache ( on an isp hard drive ) to increase speed and reduce costs of the isp as users do not have to leave the isp system ( at cost to isp). The cache of the isp is checked.Generally speed of the cached items is double compared to non cached data. The user ( you) does not know the differenceIf it is something more current ( say email) the system lets you through to that -it is transparent in operation.Proxy servers are also used as a means of people hiding their internet addresses if you can use an anonymous ( someone elses proxy server) you may well have theirs and not your internet address ( ip)You have to have a list of those anynymous proxy server. You are routed through them as one more final stephttp://www.askmarvin.ca/proxy.html

In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) which services the requests of its clients by forwarding requests to other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server. The proxy server provides the resource by connecting to the specified server and requesting the service on behalf of the client. A proxy server may optionally alter the client's request or the server's response, and sometimes it may service the request without contacting the specified server.
