Is it safe to use public proxy servers?

My ISP seems to have taken it upon themselves to slow down, or not even allow me to access certain sites. I pay for my service and do not understand why I may be restricted for any reason.
I can use public proxy servers to connect to these sites, no problem, but am I compromising my computers security by doing this? As long as I don't enter any passwords or personal info, I should be OK, right? Thanks ~Amanda
Legal vs. illegal downloads are not what I'm talking about. There are plenty of legal game mods and add-ons, and millions of other non-copyright infringing material out there, that download much faster in a bit-torrent client And isn't the main problem the rampant sharing?

I just want to know if I'm gonna compromise my security, which I believe was my question.
