You can detect the IP, but I don't think you can detect whether that IP is an originating send or a proxy. Sorta like detecting a letter has been remailed - sent from the writer to the remailing address, put in a new envelope and restamped...If you were able to compare the IP to known proxies, you could eliminate (or identify) those...

$_SERVER['HTTP_X_FORWARDED_FOR'] contains the IP address of the proxy server. By checking if it's set or not you could find out if the visitor uses a proxy. I say 'could', coz anonymous proxies don't use that.

Most of the people that are going to waste their time going onto a site they're banned on don't have time to get their own proxies, so they use public ones.
